AN OLYMPIC SIZE FEAT BY ARYA BHOMICK
GIIS QUEENSTOWN

Arya Bhomick of Class 3 F of the Queenstown campus has achieved 1st Rank in the National Science Olympiad. We heartily congratulate her and feel proud to have her as our student.

Conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation, The National Science Olympiad has proved to be a highly motivating and rigorous aptitude-testing platform with special and exclusive focus on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mental Ability. The science tournament, branded as Science Olympiad, is based on the pattern of the Sports Olympiad. This exam assesses the student at national level by doing away with the drawbacks and inadequacies of testing done at school / regional level. A national level assessment gives the student an idea where he / she stands and imparts the confidence to face exams at National level. Participants of NSO are ranked on the basis of marks obtained. Hence, after taking the first level of the test, students can judge themselves academically at four different levels - within the school, at city and state level, and above all at All-India level. Finally students are suitably awarded based on their national ranking.

GIIS has been facilitating taking of the National Science Olympiad exams since the past 4 years. Opportunity is given to all students to undertake the exams. The Queenstown and East Coast campus students are also taking exams for National Cyber Olympiad. In 2008 the East Coast campus students have started participating in the International Maths Olympiad.

Arya, almost 9, says that GIIS has provided her a platform to participate in the Science Olympiad. Reading is her passion and Arya reads a lot of science books, watches Discovery channel on TV and surfs Science websites. The NASA website is her favourite. To prepare for her exams, she also did a lot of practice with online computerized science tests and read through the prep material, which the school had prescribed. She counts Zoology and Astronomy as her prime subjects of interest in Science

In her free time she indulges in reading, cooking and Basketball. Arya loves animals and spends a lot of time playing with her dog. She also does random science experiments using things from the garden or the kitchen. She enjoys quizzing a lot and often creates quizzes for her parents and for her friends. Her parents Anuprita and Kushal are thrilled of her achievement and very proud of her. They said, “We feel that she has a natural inclination towards science and we have always encouraged her curiosity and questioning nature. Both of us work in the IT industry, so she was also exposed to computers and the internet at a very young age. We love spending time at the library and have a house full of books. She's not yet 9 but she knows a whole lot of stuff and we are constantly learning from each other thanks to Arya's quizzes. I hope the school will continue to provide forums for Arya to be more engaged because there is a lot that she can contribute and share.”
